Long Buried

You were the first to graft poetry under my skin

And I’ve separated eight years from myself

I cut my teeth on you and you taught me the proper way to mourn

And now I see you at the end of the aisle

Her hand clasped in yours and your perfect smile

Shining like you really mean it

And what I feel is not the old feelings I once had

It’s the knowledge that they are gone.

For this I am grateful, but perhaps a little more empty

Than yesterday

  1. This is a truly remarkable poem...for the ending of it caught me by surprise. I thought that you were going a certain direction with it yet you went a completely different direction...great work as always!

  2. I'm not really a poetry person. You've probably figured that out. But I read yours to know you.

And you have made me excessively curious.

    1. Well, that makes me feel special. Even though, yes, I figured you aren't a real poetry person.
First (BIG) crush poetry, I guess you could call this one. It just surprised me when he married and I realized that I didn't care. It seemed so huge at the time.

  3. This reminded me of the Beatles song, Yesterday :-)

    1. Heh. Except maybe the reverse of that song, because Yesterday my troubles were actually a lot closer.

    4. You said that you had a poem titled And still...I looked through your archive and I couldn't find it.
I like those two words they could have so much meaning, and do. And still my beating heart...And still I love you...And still...

I would like to see your poem if you would, please?

    5. Excellent question. I do have one and thought I posted it. I could have changed the name, but that would have been unfortunate....I'll see if I can provide you with an answer.

    7. And the answer is: I have not actually posted it. It's still being modified and messed around with by me. I am a little picky sometimes about what I post. So, sometime hopefully it will show up. :-)

  4. Hi - this has nothing to do with your post, i'm just not sure how else to send it - we were talking on the Gospel Coalition blog and you said I could contact you here - not just sure how to "private" message on this, though.

    looking for some understanding.
